Joélson Bugila

Joélson Bugila is a visual artist and graphic designer. He studied Visual Arts at Universidade do Extremo Sul Catarinense (UNESC) in Criciuma, Brazil. In 2015 he was part of study group at Instituto Tomie Ohtake’s Entropic School, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, coordinated by Galciani Neves and Vitor Cesar. Also in 2015 he was selected to join the Graduate Programme in Contemporary Artistic Practices at EAV-Parque Lage, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the coordination of Lisette Lagnado. Winner of Alliance Française Prize for Contemporary Art 2014, being awarded a scholarship residence at Cité des Arts in Paris, France. He currently lives in Petropolis, Brazil.

At his works on this space, Joélson explores the newspaper as a means of communication to the population, and the spaces in newspapers that are empty. In a world were truths and untruths are being blurred by conservative forces, Joélson makes us wonder what those spaces communicate to us.
